You know that painting you’ve been working on? The one that’s about 80% there and you absolutely love it?
But there’s something that still needs to shift for it to feel complete. Maybe the contrast isn’t quite right, or the color needs to be pushed just a little more.
So you stare at it. You walk around it. You think about it at night.
You might even know what needs to happen, but you’re terrified to touch it.
“What if I wreck it? What if that one “small fix” ruins the whole thing I’ve fallen in love with?”
This is one of the hardest parts of being an artist. When a painting becomes precious, it becomes almost impossible to finish. You get so worried about losing what you love that you freeze up completely.
I’m dealing with this exact thing right now with a painting I’m working on for my upcoming show. But I’ve learned something over the years about how to navigate this without destroying what’s already working.
In today’s Sunday BLOOM, I’m sharing the exact mindset shift you need to have to be able to finish paintings without wrecking what you love about them. And I’m demonstrating that mindset in real-time on that exact painting!
Here’s what I want to know: Do you have paintings sitting around that you love but are too scared to finish? How do you deal with that precious feeling?
Let me know in the comments after you watch the video.
Sometimes, the courage to finish is just remembering how you started.
Talk soon,
Nicholas
