The single most important thing you can do for your art is establish a simple daily practice of just 20 minutes a day. This consistent practice creates momentum, pulls from your intuition, and develops a strong vision for your art. Instead of overwhelming yourself by looking at endless art (museums, Instagram), focus on making your own marks daily. The Creative Awakening Challenge (February 1-25, 2026) offers a structured way to build this practice together with a community of artists, completely free.

The Problem with Overcomplicating Your Art Practice
I used to overcomplicate this. I thought, “how am I ever going to figure out my art? This is going to take so long.”
I remember going to museums twice a week for months. I looked at all this art, figuring that had to help.
Looking back, it’s a little like scrolling on Instagram. It just overwhelmed me. There’s so much great art out there, and while there was plenty I didn’t like, I was seeing so much that I couldn’t process it all.
Maybe I’d connect with David Hockney. Then I’d see Byzantine art. Then some fascinating Egyptian sculptures. It defeated me. I couldn’t synthesize any of it into something useful for my own work.
I’d come home and my head was full of all these images. I couldn’t even begin to know where to start.
Maybe you can relate to this? Sometimes you just get stuck. You don’t know what you’re going to do, so you don’t do anything.
What Actually Works: A Simple Daily Practice
That’s what’s so powerful about what I want to share with you.
A way to be in an art practice that’s playful and enjoyable. And it’s fast. We’re talking 20 minutes a day.
The single most important thing you can do for your art is establish a simple daily practice.
There are ways to do this that make it sustainable so you can keep going and keep doing it. But it is the process of showing up repeatedly that gives you the momentum.
It pulls from your intuition, all kinds of marks and all kinds of elements that go into creating a really strong vision for your art.
And you do not know what is going to happen. It’s exciting and full of possibility.
Why 20 Minutes a Day Changes Everything
Just 20 minutes a day is enough to shift from thinking about art to living as the artist who creates it.
When you show up daily, even for this short amount of time, you’re building:
- Momentum – Each session builds on the last, creating forward motion in your practice
- Intuition – Regular practice develops your artistic instincts and creative decision-making
- Vision – Consistent work reveals patterns and directions you couldn’t see otherwise
- Sustainability – Twenty minutes is doable, which means you can actually maintain this practice
- Joy – Short sessions keep the pressure off and the playfulness alive
The magic isn’t in marathon studio sessions where you exhaust yourself. It’s in the regular, sustainable rhythm of showing up.
How to Set Up Your Practice
Materials
You don’t need fancy supplies to begin. I use a journal, and I’ll show you exactly what size works best.
This is the size journal I use for this practice already. Here’s a page of mine from a couple days ago. That was actually about 10 minutes. I was even on the phone.
This is a great size book to use. But what I would recommend if you’re going to use this size is to orient it vertically. The reason is you get more room to work.
And when you post this work, which creates wonderful content for your Instagram, it’s a good proportion. It fits on that image grid really well.
This approach is so much more exciting than working on just half a page. And if you work horizontally across both pages, they don’t fit on Instagram or stories very well.
You could use a square book if you prefer, but again, I would orient it vertically.
The Practice Itself
The practice is simple:
- Set a timer for 20 minutes
- Make marks without overthinking
- Stay playful and curious
- Don’t judge what you’re creating
- Show up again tomorrow
That’s it. No complicated systems. No pressure to create masterpieces. Just consistent, joyful exploration.
The Creative Awakening Challenge
I’m so excited about this. I’ve always wanted to do this. We are going to do this together.
I’m going to teach you the art practice that took me so many years to figure out. It’s so simple. It’s so easy. You’re not going to believe what happens.
How It Works
