This is a wonderful observation Nicholas, and a great way to explain it. I have always approached my work from these two mindsets, but never had an official, non “art-speak” name for it. I love the idea of the “quiet conversation”. I have always thought the true reward of viewing an artwork was in its “formal qualities”, but the “quiet conversation” sounds so much more approachable. Thank you for this, and all your wonderful insights. I learn a lot from you, and it is greatly appreciated. Continued success 🙂

I always really enjoy your posts Nicholas and loved this one because I actually got to see you and not just read what you write. This post really resonated with me. In my paintings I always try and get something dramatic from a distance but I also want it to be interesting up close and your post gave me the right words to explain what I am aiming for. The “quiet conversation” is a great way to describe it. Thank you.
