Let’s talk gesso…

This week I am in the studio preparing canvases and I thought I would share my process with you.

Take a look.

I will start with two coats of gesso. I use Liquitex gesso, which can be gloppy, so I thin it down with a little water. The gesso soaks into the canvas and seals it, providing a nice white surface that acrylic paint takes too easily.

Although putting this body of work together is daunting, it’s fast and efficient to have all the canvases ready simultaneously. Some have a first layer of paint already so now, I’ll work on these new canvases to bring them up to that same stage. The gesso phase is done!

I hope this step-by-step journey to my show this summer is helpful to you. Let me know in the comments what else you’d like me to share about my preparations!

Have a great week!

Nicholas
