I want to share a quick approach that helps me when I’m not feeling much momentum in the studio – but I do want something exciting to happen in the work.
What I’ve found is that putting together things that are really different – especially early on – can bring a piece to life almost instantly.
Sometimes it’s color. Sometimes it’s value.
Lately, I’ve been reaching for both – pushing bold saturated colors next to desaturated ones, and going straight in with black and white.
It doesn’t take long.
Just a few strong moves can change everything.
In today’s Sunday Bloom, You’ll see how this plays out in a recent piece I started. It took just about an hour, but already has so much happening in it.
When I compare it to another painting I’ve been refining over several sessions, the quick one has a surprising power that the more labored piece doesn’t.
Let me know in the comments if this strategy could work for you.
Be sure to get out and make some art today and I will see you soon.
~ Nicholas
P.S. Even when a piece isn’t finished, it can still feel finished – just because of the energy it holds.
