The 3-2-1 Blast Off Framework: How to Find Clarity to Create Your Best Future Art

The clues to your future irresistible art are hiding in your past work. The 3-2-1 Blast Off Framework helps you uncover your artistic direction by identifying: 3 pieces from the past 12-18 months you love, 2 qualities they share, and 1 word that describes the feeling of all three. This framework helped Nicholas transition from illustration to fine art and create the iconic Four Agreements book cover. When you’re clear about your direction, everything happens faster, stronger, and easier.

The Clues Are Hiding in Plain Sight

The clues to your future irresistible art are hiding in plain sight.

Today I’m sharing a simple framework that will help you uncover the direction for your future art.

Because this is so important to understand where you’re going. Once you do, it happens faster, it happens stronger, it happens easier.

How I Discovered This Framework

I learned this framework years ago when I was an illustrator.

For many years I was just making whatever people wanted. Make me a picture of a bird. Do the president of the bank. Do this, do that. And I was just responding and making all this art. It was frustrating because I never really liked anything I created.

So after a pretty challenging year of doing so much stuff for so many people and not liking any of it, I grabbed a few of the things that I did like. And I took notes on what I liked about them.

I remember them. There were three of them.

I had done this painting of an angel, this kind of symbolic angel. I had two botanical pictures, nature and flowers and stuff. And they were kind of mythical feeling. They were awesome.

And they were, I painted them on wood. I put gesso on wood, and I scraped and sanded the wood so they felt really time worn. They were sort of symbolic. Like there was something archetypal that imbued them. There was a meaning behind it.

I endeavored the following year to stay in that lane, and only do work like that.

The Result: The Four Agreements

As a result of doing that work, I created The Four Agreements book cover.

This blew up my career. I launched into fine art as a result of learning this. But this book came as a result of understanding what it was that I was good at, what it was that I loved.

This is so important because this just makes everything faster and easier, especially for those of you who are wanting to really develop your careers, really sell your work.

Doing one irresistible piece of art because you’re clear can have incredible consequences for your career. I’m serious.

It’s the one piece. Oprah picked this up and it became Book Club Book of the Month and I was literally put on the map. I got so much work from this. I learned so much. It was just amazing.

The same thing can happen for you. That one piece. That’s why the gallery’s going to say yes. The one piece that people want to buy again and again and again. The one piece that 200,000 people are going to like, and they’re going to start following you.

When you’re clear, it makes such a difference.

The 3-2-1 Blast Off Framework

I call it the 3-2-1 Blast Off Framework, but it’s actually the 3, 2, 1 countdown. Like you’re just counting down. So three goes first.

Step 1: Identify Your Three Favorite Pieces

Look back over the last year. What are the three pieces of art that you love that really stood out?

And if you have to go back 18 months, that’s fine. If you haven’t been making art, you’ve got those in your history. I don’t care how long the span is between them, but usually 12 to 18 months so they’re kind of current.

What are those three pieces?

Step 2: Find Two Shared Qualities

What are the two qualities they both share?

In this kind of work at the time, I wanted it to feel time worn. I wanted it to feel archetypal. These were qualities that I was interested in showing in the work.

Step 3: Define One Word for the Feeling

What’s the one word that describes the feeling of all three of them?

For me it was archetypal. It was wisdom. Soulful.

I wanted the pictures to not just be a picture of a flower, but alluding to something greater. It’s symbolic. It’s iconic.

That was really interesting to me. Still is actually.

How to Use This Framework

So that’s how you do it. It’s 3, 2, 1, right?

You ask yourself those questions and get that insight. Then take that information and think about that. Write that down.

As you make the next work, it starts informing it. And you’re going to get closer. And you’re going to get faster. And you’re going to get more clear and make better work for you.

Because that’s the clue. The key here is to make work that really resonates for you. Then it will for the rest of the world.

Why Clarity Changes Everything

You get this right and your art really, really takes off.

It’s this kind of quality. When you’re clear, it makes such a difference.

The sooner you understand where you’re going, the faster, the better, and more compelling your art will become.
